Introduction

A significant part of the human experience is the pursuit and achievement of worthwhile pursuits. Yet, it is equally human to fall short occasionally. Millions worldwide struggle to maintain their good habits or keep bad habits and addictions at bay.

Especially in today's digital age, there's a missing sense of community and connection that humans inherently crave and thrive on. The self-improvement path is often an uncomfortable and lonely process for many. But, I believe there's a better way.

That’s why I created Fernara. Fernara is here to bridge the gap by bringing people together and guiding them through a fun and meaningful journey towards their full potential. This project aims to reimagine the self-improvement experience by addressing the often cold, lonely, and boring approaches prevalent in the market.

What is Fernara?

Fernara is a mobile application that leverages the power of accountability partners, an approach rooted in scientific evidence for boosting achievement, to motivate users towards greater heights. As they navigate through habits, challenges, and tournaments, they accrue experience points, allowing them to level up and unveil new opportunities. Each milestone they reach is reflected in their customizable solo or co-created gardens. These gardens, visual testimonies to their dedication, can be embellished with diverse items - either earned through perseverance or selected from our expansive in-game store.

For those who thrive on competition, our leaderboards spotlight top achievers, adding an element of friendly rivalry. Communities and user-created clubs, with their supportive and social networking aspects, form the backbone of our platform. Users, influencers, and organizations come together to create dynamic spaces that foster interaction, camaraderie, and shared growth. Within these clubs, moderators can craft their own habits, challenges, and tournaments or choose from our comprehensive digital library for members to participate in. Our platform also facilitates chats, video calls, and social feeds, ensuring continuous and meaningful communication among members. Fernara's mission is to change lives for the better, allowing people to experience a newfound enthusiasm for life, from overcoming bad habits to assisting those needing an extra boost in discipline for achieving any goal or pursuit imaginable.

Fernara offers a unique approach in the self-improvement app market, differentiating itself from popular apps like Productive, Fabulous, Finch, Habitat, and Challenges. While these apps excel in areas like habit tracking and artistic design, they fall short in community engagement, accountability partners, and immersive gamification. Fernara stands out with its simple interface, varied features, social networking aspects, and diverse revenue model, including ads, in-game purchases, partnerships, and subscriptions, addressing the need for a more holistic and engaging self-improvement experience.

In interviews with individuals interested in self-improvement, a recurring theme of dissatisfaction with existing applications emerged. These applications are often seen as mere tools for logging habits and progress, lacking deeper engagement or motivation. Fernara differentiates itself by fostering connections with accountability partners and integrating broader community interaction through clubs. Users are rewarded and incentivized, further stimulating their commitment to self-improvement.

Features and Products

Visualized Growth

Users can personalize their gardens, finding satisfaction in visualizing their progress. These evolving gardens reflect the user's achievements, growing and changing as they maintain consistent habits, win challenges, or complete quests. They can also showcase these gardens on their profiles or share them in feeds. An in-game store offers enhancements for these gardens, adding to the user's experience.

Accountability Partnership System

Fernara offers an intuitive platform designed to maximize the benefits of accountability partnerships. Users can collaboratively commit to forming positive habits, discarding negative ones, or undertaking challenges and tournaments. Each user will access an accountability dashboard, where they can monitor their partner's daily progress. Features include reminder pings, motivational gifting, text or video chats, a co-created garden to visualize collective achievements, and XP rewards for interacting with their partners.

To boost engagement and increase the likelihood of meaningful connections, several solutions were implemented:

  • Co-created Gardens & Group Streaks: Users with general accountability partners can opt-in to create a garden together, filling it with plants and trees earned on their journey. It serves as a meaningful reminder of the progress they've made and what is yet to come.
  • XP-Rewards for Attending Weekly Meetings: Research shows that accountability partners who go over their progress regularly dramatically increase their chances of success. This insight led to shifting the XP-reward focus from achieving habits and challenges to rewarding users for community engagement, like attending their weekly accountability partner meetings.
  • Group Streaks: User feedback tests on rival technologies revealed a preference for a feature called “group streak”, which shows how many consecutive days both partners have achieved their goal. This feature is effective because it creates an elevated sense of accountability, as no one wants to be responsible for breaking the streak.

Gamified Challenges, Tournaments & Quests

Fernara makes self-improvement fun and engaging with interactive challenges, tournaments, and leaderboards. These can be tackled solo or in groups. Users can create their own challenges and tournaments to invite friends to join the fun. There are also Daily and weekly quests promote habit consistency and encourage users to engage with others and explore the app's features.

Clubs & Communities

Designed to cater to a wide array of interests, Fernara offers an extensive range of communities and clubs, with areas like fitness, dieting, well-being, and virtually any goal-oriented pursuit. If users find that a particular community is missing, they have the convenience of creating their own. This option allows users to either tap into a comprehensive library filled with community-suggested habits and challenges, complemented by a unique XP system, or craft their own custom challenges. The platform is equipped with advanced features, such as regular group chats, video calls, and a system that allows club admins to anonymously validate members' accomplishments based on evidence. Moreover, each club is enriched with a social feed, enabling members to stay updated with others' progress, thereby cultivating a strong sense of camaraderie and shared support.

  • While contemplating ways to boost social engagement, I conceived the idea of allowing users to create their own clubs. This solution not only enhances social engagement by enabling users to form niche communities but also creates an ‘auto-generating’ system. This system allows users to add more value for other users and gives them another reason to use the app and to join their community.
  • A concept I take pride in is providing users and clubs with the flexibility to not only create a habit or challenge but also to choose one from the user-created public library of habits and challenges and modify it as they see fit. This approach is another way of enabling users to create value for others on the platform.

Freemium Model + Ads

Fernara utilizes a limited freemium model, complemented by non-intrusive advertising in users’ social feeds. Users can also engage with ads voluntarily for extra items or perks.

Subscriptions

Priced at $4.99/month, the subscription offers ad removal, 24/7 support from an AI accountability partner, weekly XP boosts, diamond boosts, monthly streak recoveries, and unlimited access to challenges, habits, and clubs.

In-Game Currency and Store

Users can purchase diamonds, the in-game currency, to use in the 'plant shop'. Here, they can buy customizations for their gardens, seeds, plants, pots, mystery boxes, XP recoveries, and more. The seeds in Fernara have different rarity levels, ranging from common to mystic, to keep users engaged.

Collaborations and Strategic Partnerships

Partnerships with influencers and organizations are pivotal in enabling the creation and promotion of exclusive items and challenges. This collaboration offers a trifecta of benefits: it diversifies revenue streams, enhances user engagement, and effectively onboards collective fan bases through targeted shoutouts.

Additionally, users have the chance to engage with favorite influencers, brands, and businesses. Members actively participate in custom challenges set by these entities, earning exclusive rewards like limited edition digital assets. This approach not only enriches the user experience but also deepens their engagement with the platform, leveraging social influence and intrinsic motivation.

  • Development & Accomplishment: Users gain a sense of achievement as they navigate through challenges, amass points, and level up. The visual representation of growth is demonstrated by the seeds of their habits blossoming into flourishing trees, serving as a potent symbol of personal progression and the transformative power of consistent effort.
  • Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback: Fernara provides a fertile ground for creativity, where users personalize their gardens, create their own clubs, and partake in a vibrant exchange of feedback within the community.
